Have you ever looked in the mirror or found an eyelash on your pillow and worried that your lash extensions are falling out?
Take a deep breath! Natural lash shedding is a completely healthy, biological process. Every hair follicle on our body follows its own independent rhythm, and our eyelashes are no exception. Understanding how this growth cycle works helps you care for your lashes better and explains why regular infills are essential for maintaining full, seamless sets.
The Lash Growth Cycle at a Glance
The life of a natural lash moves continuously through four distinct stages:
[ Phase 1: ANAGEN ] ──▶ [ Phase 2: CATAGEN ] ──▶ [ Phase 3: TELOGEN ] ──▶ [ Phase 4: EXOGEN ]
(Active Growth) (Transition) (Resting) (Shedding & Regrowth)
2–7 weeks 2–3 weeks 3–4 months Natural Release
Because each follicle is on its own unique timeline, you never lose all your lashes at once. On average, most people naturally shed 2 to 5 natural lashes per day!

Phase 1: Anagen (The Growth Phase)
(Diagram reference: Anagen stage showing active root bulb and developing hair shaft within the follicle[cite: 2])
Duration: 2 to 7 weeks[cite: 2]
What Happens: This is the most active stage where the lash is actively growing from the follicle[cite: 2]. The root is firmly anchored and continuously fed by blood supply.
Lash Care Tip: Lash health is critical here[cite: 2]! Baby lashes are delicate, fine, and still developing[cite: 2]. A professional lash artist will always select a lightweight extension or skip very young "baby lashes" to avoid putting stress on them as they grow.
Phase 2: Catagen (The Transition Phase)
(Diagram reference: Catagen stage illustrating follicle shrinkage and detached bulb[cite: 2])
Duration: 2 to 3 weeks[cite: 2]
What Happens: Growth stops, and the hair follicle begins to shrink and detach from the blood supply[cite: 2]. The lash has reached its maximum natural length.
Lash Care Tip: No new growth takes place during this stage[cite: 2]. Keep lashes well-nourished and conditioned so they remain pliable and strong as they prepare for the resting phase[cite: 2].
Phase 3: Telogen (The Resting Phase)
(Diagram reference: Telogen stage showing a mature, dormant lash sitting in the rested follicle[cite: 2])
Duration: 3 to 4 months[cite: 2]
What Happens: The mature lash sits comfortably dormant inside the hair follicle while the follicle rests[cite: 2].
Lash Care Tip: This resting phase accounts for the vast majority of the full-length, mature lashes visible across your lash line[cite: 2]. These are the strong, ideal lashes your artist applies classic or volume fans to.
Phase 4: Exogen & New Anagen (Shedding & Regrowth)
(Diagram reference: Exogen stage showing the old lash falling away as a new lash sprout emerges in the follicle[cite: 2])
Duration: Natural release / Continuous transition[cite: 2]
What Happens: The old lash naturally detaches and sheds from the follicle, and a brand-new baby lash (entering Anagen) is already emerging right behind it[cite: 2]!
Lash Care Tip: Don't panic![cite: 2] Seeing a lash shed with an extension still securely attached simply means your follicle completed its natural lifecycle[cite: 2]. It is healthy, expected, and makes way for new, strong growth[cite: 2].

Why Regular Infills Are Necessary
Because your lashes are continuously moving through these different cycles:
Natural Shedding: As Telogen lashes enter the Exogen phase, extensions attached to them naturally fall away[cite: 2].
Outgrowth: As Anagen lashes grow out, the extension moves further away from the lash line, eventually becoming heavy or unbalanced.
Booking maintenance refills every 2 to 3 weeks allows your lash stylist to:
Safely remove outgrown lashes before they twist or stress your root.
Apply fresh extensions to newly matured lashes that are ready to carry them.
Keep your lash line balanced, lightweight, and healthy long-term.
